At the end of 1986, the Victorian Football League decided to expand the boundaries of the competition by inviting two new teams; the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears.

The Bears struggled in their early years, and at the end of 1996, formed a joint venture team with the financially vulnerable Fitzroy Lions known as the Brisbane Lions. Within just a few seasons, the newly branded Brisbane club has become the dominant force in the competition.
