Balmain joined the inaugural Australian Rugby League competition in 1908, and won their first premiership title in 1915.  They dominated the rest of the decade, and had further success in the 1930s and 1940s.

After a long period without success, Balmain again won the title in 1969.  They consistently made the finals in the 1980s, but premiership glory eluded them in their final years.

Players such as Charles Fraser, Arthur Halloway, Pat Devery, Harry Bath, Arthur Patton, Tom Bourke, Keith Barnes, Peter Provan, Larry Corowa, Wayne Pearce, and Steve Roach are forever etched in the history of the Balmain Tigers.
