DAVIS CUP UPDATE

September 24, 2018

The 2018 Davis Cup final will be played between France and Croatia from November 23rd.  The top seed France defeated Spain 3-2 in Lille, thanks to singles wins from Benoit Paire and Lucas Pouille.  The doubles team of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut won their clash in straight sets to claim victory for the home team.

Croatia, the fourth seed, defeated the United States 3-2.  Borna Coric and Maric Cilic won their opening matches in straight sets, but the team of Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic had to come from two sets down to claim victory in the doubles.

Australia, who crashed out of the World Group with a loss to Germany, went down 3-1 to Austria in the World Group playoffs, and will have to fight their way through the Asia/Oceania Group to qualify for next year's tournament.  Jordan Thompson had the misfortune of running into a red hot Dominic Thiem, while Alex De Minaur managed to take the first set from Dennis Novak.  Lleyton Hewitt came out of retirement to team with John Peers to win the doubles match, but Thiem was too strong for De Minaur, winning in four sets to give Austria the victory.
