After coming with a win of making the 2018 Grand Final, Cronulla will be looking to go even better in 2019. They have signed New Zealand test half Shaun Johnson, who has something to prove after a long career with the Warriors. The Sharks have also picked up veteran back Josh Morris to compensate for the loss of centres Ricky Leutele and Jesse Ramien. Cronulla have also farewelled veteran forward Luke Lewis, the Clive Churchill Medal winner when the Sharks won the Grand Final in 2016.
The Sharks pack still contains several representative class forwards, including Wade Graham, Aaron Woods, Matt Prior, Andrew Fifita, and the evergreen Paul Gallen. Chad Townsend won’t give up his spot to Johnson without a fight, while it remains to be seen what the best position is for Josh Dugan and Matt Moylan.
The Sharks may be looking for new avenues of attack. Besides the loss of Ramien, Cronulla farewell Edrick Lee, who joins Newcastle, as well as star test winger Valentine Holmes, who is off to the USA to try his luck in the National Football League. Holmes, Lee, and Ramien were Cronulla’s top three try scorers in 2018, scoring 44 tries between them. The rest of the entire squad managed 48.
