TRIO IN DOUBT FOR ASIAN CUP

December 11, 2018

Australia’s plans for the Asian Cup are in turmoil as a trio of their best players are in serious doubt for the tournament.  Daniel Arzani looks certain to be out following a serious knee injury sustained in November while playing for Celtic, and now Tom Rogic and Aaron Mooy are in danger of missing the event.

Aaron Mooy, playing for Huddersfield in the English Premier League, has also suffered a knee injury, which could keep him out for six weeks.  The Asian Cup begins on January 6th.  Tom Rogic, also recovering from a knee injury, has had little time playing for Celtic in reason matches.

Australian coach Graham Arnold is keeping a close eye on Rogic and Mooy, but is resigned to being without Arzani.  James Troisi would be an obvious choice to come into the squad if necessary.  Troisi has played 37 matches for Australia, but was cut from the extended squad before the World Cup earlier this year.  The Melbourne Victory star scored the winning goal for Australia in the 2015 Asian Cup Final.

Australia will play Jordan, Palestine and Syria in the group stages of the tournament.
