Australia’s Ashleigh Barty has won the WTA Elite Trophy, defeating China’s Wang Qiang in the final, 6-3, 6-4. It caps off a great year for Barty, who will finish in the top 16 ranked players. Barty finished on top of her group, which included the in-form Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, and France’s Caroline Garcia.
Wanq Qiang advanced to the semi-finals after Madison Keys withdrew due to injury. Qiang defeated Spain’s Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0 to earn her way into the final. Barty defeated fifth seed, Julia Gorges of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second semi-final.
Barty will be able to rest up for the next few weeks, knowing she will be well placed to go deep into the Australian Open tournament. Before that, she will represent Australia at the Hopman Cup towards the end of December.
