SHEFFIELD SHIELD – WEEK THREE

VIC V SA

Victoria remain on top of the Sheffield Shield table after playing a draw with South Australia at the MCG.  The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, and were in trouble at 3/45, before 56 from Jake Lehmann, and 118 from Tom Cooper rescued the innings.  South Australia were all out for 244.  Scott Boland took 7/54 for the home side.

Victoria’s openers began the run chase with solid half centuries.  Travis Dean made 75, and Marcus Harris scored 65, before Peter Handscomb continued his good form with a valuable 123.  South Australia’s bowlers increased their efforts to dismantle the rest of the line-up, with the home side being all out for 351, after at one stage being 1/159.  Joe Mennie took four wickets.

Conor McInerney was the pick of the South Australian batsmen in their second innings, top scoring with 63.  South Australia was dismissed for 230, and Victoria was at 2/22 at the end of play, securing first innings points in the draw.

 

QLD V WA

It was a run-fest in Brisbane in the match between Queensland and Western Australia.  The home side won the toss and elected to bat.  Matthew Renshaw made 89, and Charlie Hemphrey scored 72, before all-rounder Jimmy Peirson scored a slashing 82 not out as Queensland decalred their innings at 9/448.

In reply, Western Australia were struggling at 3/42, before Ashton Turner joined Mitch Marsh at the crease.  Marsh made a patient 151 which must have delighted national selectors, while Turner scored 48.  William Bosisto posted 167 not out, and Jhye Richardson chipped in with 55 as the vistors compiled a total of 540.

Queensland were at 2/135 at the close of play, with Joe Burns unbeaten on 80.  The drawn result sees Western Australia remain second, while Queensland are still on the bottom of the ladder.

 

NSW V TAS

Despite the troubles with the national team, the future of Australian cricket looks bright.  Two New South Wales youngsters, Jason Sangha and Jack Edwards, scored centuries against Tasmania in their clash at Sydney.  Sangha made 117, and Edwards scored 101 as the home side declared their first innings at 9/442.  They were assisted by 78 from Daniel Hughes, and 56 from Kurtis Patterson.

Trent Copeland continued his run of good form, ripping through Tasmania’s top order, taking four wickets.  Tasmania declared at 4/115, and then New South Wales declared at 1/22 as both teams were looking for a decisive result.

Tasmania hung on for a draw in the end.  They were 7/264 at the close of play, still 85 runs short of the home side’s total.  Alex Doolan scored 90, and Beau Webster made an unbeaten 80.  Nathan Lyon took four wickets for New South Wales.
