CROSS COUNTER WINS MELBOURNE CUP

November 6, 2018

The Charlie Appleby trained Cross Counter has become the first British trained horse to win the Melbourne Cup.  Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Cross Counter is the first Melbourne Cup winner for the Godolphin organisation.

Starting at 8/1, Cross Counter was way back in the field at the final turn, and still had fifteen horses in front of him at the 400 metre mark.  In the final stages of the race, Cross Counter came through the pack to beat home Marmelo by a length.  Prince of Arran ran third.

In a sad footnote to the race, Irish horse The Cliffsofmoher broke a shoulder early in the race, and had to be euthanized.
