Sheffield Shield – Week One Results

 

QLD V TAS

The Gabba, Brisbane

Tasmania, fresh off their One Day Series final defeat at the hands of Tasmania, won the toss and elected to bat.  Alex Doolan compiled a patient 115, and Matthew Wade returned to form with an unbeaten 72, as Tasmania made 355 in their first innings.  Peter George took 4/76 for Queensland, while Mark Steketee and Luke Feldman each took three wickets.

Queensland were bowled out for 148 in reply.  Jimmy Peirson top scored with 42.  Jackson Bird was the hero for Tasmania, finishing with 5/35.  Tasmania were rolled for 132 on a deteriorating pitch.  Matthew Wade was the top scorer with 51, and finished the match with two half centuries.

Any hopes Queensland had soon faded when Jackson Bird took a wicket on the third ball.  Queensland were all out for just 93, with Bird finishing with another five wickets to be named the Player of the Match.  Tasmania won by 246 runs.

 

SA V NSW

Adelaide Oval

The home side won the toss and sent New South Wales in to bat.  Opener Daniel Hughes scored 60, Moises Henriques made 47, and Trent Copeland knocked out a late and unbeaten 55 as NSW were bowled out for 246.  Joe Mennie took 5/39 for South Australia.

Full of confidence after his late heroics with the bat, Trent Copeland took six wickets as South Australia took a small first innings lead.  They were all out for 273, with Jake Lehmann their top scorer with 61.

New South Wales’ middle order struggled to gain the ascendancy, and it was left to wicket keeper Peter Nevill to score 72 not out, before declaring with his team on 8/279.  Chadd Sayers took five wickets for South Australia.

The home side managed a stoic 103 for the loss of six wickets, as the match finished in a draw.  Jake Lehmann scored 33 not out from 126 balls, while Trent Copeland took another three wickets in a Player of the Match performance.  Sean Abbott also finished with three wickets.

 

WA V VIC

WACA, Perth

One Day Series champions Victoria won the toss, and sent the home side into bat.  Western Australia were all out for just 208, with Marcus Stoinis top scoring with 80.  Chris Tremain took 4/37 for Victoria, while Scott Boland chipped in with three wickets.

Victoria were 2/63 after losing openers Travis Dean and Marcus Harris.  Twenty year old Will Pucovski made a splendid 243 from 311 balls to right the innings.  Pucovski received support from Matt Short with 80, as Victoria scored 504.  Marcus Stoinis took four wickets for Western Australia.

The home side were in dire trouble after losing their first five wickets for just 45 runs inside the 19th over.  Josh Philippe made 104, and Josh Inglis scored 69 as Western Australia were bowled out for 251, giving Victoria the win by an innings and 45 runs.  Chris Tremain took another five wickets, and Scott Boland claimed four.  Will Pucovski was a deserving winner of the Player of the Match award.
