The future of Conor McGregor in UFC looks uncertain, after he was beaten by Russia’s Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round via submission. The two-division former champion was competing for the first time since November 2016, and was expected to regain his title, after his brief foray into professional boxing.
The finish of UFC 229 was marred by a bizarre ringside fight after the championship match, with Nurmagomedov attacking McGregor’s corner man, Dillon Danis. McGregor then scuffled with Khabib’s cousin Abubakar, as well as two of the Russian’s corner men.
Nurmagomedov later stated he was spurred into action due to Danis allegedly making racial and religious slurs during the bout; a claim Danis denies. The Nevada State Athletic Commission has launched an investigation into the post-match farce, and a hearing will be held on October 24.
