Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans has led the PM XIII to a 34-18 victory over Papua New Guinea. Cherry-Evans scored two tries, and set up two more in a match that had to be briefly suspended due to a pitch invasion.
Canberra winger Nick Cotric scored the opening try after just six minutes. Jake Trbojevic and Cherry-Evans crossed to give the visitors an 18-0 lead after just 16 minutes. The Manly captain scored his second try in the 33rd minute, but the home side hit back with a try from Canterbury lock Rhyse Martin. However, fullback Corey Allan scored on the stroke of halftime to give Australia a 30-6 lead.
Papua New Guinea fought back in the second half, scoring two tries to cut the lead to 30-18. A try from Chad Townsend in the 69th minute secured the victory for Australia. Young St George-Illawarra centre Zac Lomax kicked five goals in the win.
Australia will play a test match against New Zealand in Auckland on October 13.
