The men’s China Open has already lost three of its top eight seeds. Jack Sock lost in the opening round to Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets; while Borna Coric went down in three sets to Spanish wild card entrant, Feliciano Lopez. Grigor Dmitriv made it to the second round, before bowing out with a loss to Serbian qualifier, Dusan Lajovic. Top seed Juan Martin del Potro, Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, Germany’s Alex Zverev, and the Italian pair of Fabio Fognini and Marco Cecchinato are all safely through to the second round.
In the women’s event, Simona Halep was forced to retire with injury after losing the first set of her match with Ons Jabuer of Tunisia. Elina Svitolina, Petra Kvitova, and Elise Mertens were all knocked out in the opening round, and Madison Keys was forced to withdraw after her first round victory. Jelena Ostapenko and Garbine Muguruza were defeated in the second round. Caroline Wozniacki is the top seeded player left in the tournament, and will play the in-form Anett Knotaveit in the third round, if she can get past Cratia’s Petra Martic. Defending champion, Caroline Garcia is through to the third round, as is US Open Champion Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, Sloane Stephens, and Angelique Kerber.
