EUROPE DEFEAT USA TO CLAIM RYDER CUP
October 1, 2018
Europe have defeated the USA to claim the Ryder Cup. The Americans travelled to France, and extended their losing streak in the Ryder Cup in Europe to fifteen years.
Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn was named captain of the Europe squad, and selected England’s Paul Casey and Ian Poulter, Spain’s Sergio Garcia, and Henrik Stenson of Sweden as his captain’s picks. The qualified players were Francesco Molinari of Italy, Jon Rahm of Spain, Sweden’s Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, and the English trio of Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tyrrell hatton.
The USA team was captained by Jim Furyk. World number one, Dustin Johnson was the star of a team that included Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, Webb Simpson, and the rookie, Justin Thomas. Jim Furyk’s captain’s picks were Phil Mickelson, Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, and Tiger Woods.
The Americans won the first three of four fourball matches, but Europe ended the first day ahead after winning all four of the afternoon foursomes. On day two, Europe had further success in the fourballs, while the foursomes were split evenly. The Cup hung in the balance on the third day, before Thorbjorn Olesen defeated Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm defeated Tiger Woods, and Ian Poulter upset Dustin Johnson. Patrick Reed’s win over Tyrrell hatton was not enough to prevent Europe claiming the Ryder Cup with a 17.5 to 10.5 victory. Francesco Molinari, the number five ranked player in the world, was the star, winning all five of his matches.
